How to Tighten Fan Belt on a Cat 3126 Freightliner Motorhome Engine

Topic: newly belts connected diesel motor squeaking
Posted By: thegriffins on 01/19/15 10:14am Fair-and-square had each the belts replaced on our diesel Freightliner chassis. Before we left we noticed they were squeaking fortissimo. We had the recompense man check them. He sprayed belt dressing happening them and it helped for literally a minute. He told me to drive it a while and the close shave should go away. Information technology has been nonvoluntary more or less 60 miles. IT's now squeaking louder than ever. Is 60 miles not adequate? Is this typical? Was the mechanic just trying to get Pine Tree State kayoed the room access?

Posted By: bobman along 01/19/15 10:28am No its non normal
Posted By: rgatijnet1 on 01/19/15 10:35am Once a belt out starts to screak the rubber is usually glazed and will non get better. I'm guessing that the belt was non properly tensioned when installed or that it was just too long(wrong belt) to be properly tensioned.
Posted By: wolfe10 on 01/19/15 10:37am We need Thomas More information:

What engine?

What belt?

Automatic tensioner or manual tensioner happening that whang?

Miles on coach?

Were the belts replaced as PM or was there an issue. If an issue, were all the items driven aside that belt hand spun to check for failing bearing? Conjunction of pulleys?

Piece they had the engine blown apart I had them put back each the belts as PM. I don't know the answer to your other questions. I hindquarters hear the noise from the rear in the drivers seat!
Posted By: 2bzy2c on 01/19/15 10:43am I could comprise a belt is loose.
My advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.
Posted Past: wolfe10 on 01/19/15 11:15am The Caterpillar C7 very likely has two belts:

An old fashion V belt that drives only the water pump. So, crankshaft pulley, piss pump and manually adjusted idler pulley. THIS BELT IS CRITICAL-- if loose, the water system pump may not turn and engine will overheat. It can only be checked from downstairs-- driver's side of engine between block and fan shroud. It doesn't need to be bar tight, just should not glucinium unofficial.

The other belt is a serpentine belt which drives the accessories. So, crankshaft pulley, alternator, A/C compressor and automatic knock tensioner.

Here is a close video on belt tensioners from Gates Corporation: https://www.youtube.com/look on?v=uTLV5IU_IMM

Posted Aside: wolfe10 along 01/19/15 11:34am BTW, information technology if the long-ago belts did not squeal, it could be something as simple is the wrong belt-- if an edge or two longer than the correct one, tension would not be correct. Beaver State the new belt(s) May non be installed properly-- perhaps a groove off.

Call Freightliner with your VIN and convey the correct belt theatrical role numbers/belt description and compare with what they put on: Freightliner 800 385-4357

you have two belts or one? Most diesel pushers take a serpentine drive belt and a regular V groove just to drive the AC compressor
Does It sqeak just sitting on that point loafing operating theater only on acceleration?
Rangy difference on what the problem may exist
also need to determine which belt is the culprit
Posted Aside: wolfe10 happening 01/19/15 02:06pm Actually, many Cummins engines have a separate belt for A/C.

Most Caterpillar engines (3116, 3126 and well-nig C7's) have a disjoined belt for water system pump with the serpentine belt driving A/C compressor and alternator. The theory here is that a hard aim on alternator or A/C compressor will not cause overheating/shutdown.

Posted Away: egh33 on 01/19/15 05:09pm Take a cake of grievous bodily harm rub it on the inner of the belt if you can reach it. It should stop, unless there is something wrong that necessitate an adaptation.

Posted By: wolfe10 happening 01/19/15 05:46pm Actually, with evident belt squeal forthwith after fitting belts, I would sure locate the reason/source.

Awry belt out, wrong installation or seized bearing are not going to slump themselves.

Gaga belt just starting to squeal, particularly when cold and damp-- that is another matter.

Posted By: Passin Thru on 01/19/15 06:36pm Tighten the belts. If a pulley had frozen the belt would burn up already. You use a wrench and a bar and tighten it until the whang has 1/4 in of impart downward in it, past reduce. Any questions? Don't rub soap on it. 3 million miles of experience tell me that!

Posted Away: wolfe10 on 01/19/15 06:56pm Happening the OP's Caterpillar engine, the primary belt (serpentine belt) has an automatic tensioner. So, tension is not adjustable except with tensioner replacement-- over again, assuming that the new belt is the proper duration. If an inch operating theatre two too long-- presto you have your job.
Posted By: hershey on 01/19/15 07:27pm I had my belts replaced on my Cummin's engine. Winnow came apart so I too persuasion PM of belts and hoses was a good idea at that time. I can't believe the trouble finding the right belts for my engine. Cummin's had a number, didn't fit at all...Freightliner had numbers and sole unrivalled of the deuce fit. The other belt was finally base past visitation and error.
No belt should squeal on instalmen. Only two reasons, a bad bearing connected the altenator or idler pulley(s) or AC or the wrong smash old. Actually a third, the bash was not adjusted right..

I guess being an old man makes me aver things like that. I have rubbed soap on many of them and took care of the job.
What did the 3 million miles have to do with information technology?? Just questioning.

Gigantic remainder happening what the problem may be

Wolfe 10 Possibly the tensioner is spent.

Gibe. Visit the Gates Corp link in my second post.

At this bespeak, looking at forward to feedback from the OP.

First interview-- are the belts the correct ones per the chassis maker.

Posted By: thegriffins happening 01/21/15 08:12am A little update - I took the screaming Winnebago back to Freightliner and "suggested" that maybe the wrong belts were installed. (Thanks to every the suggestions from this meeting place!) It was not squealing before it was worked along. Supposed to find something out today. To answer Predawn's question, information technology squeals just sitting and impulsive. When we picked it up later on the initial job was finished, we detected it. We didn't leave until someone checked it out. The mechanic same to thrust it a while because it should bring off itself out. I wish update the verdict.
Posted By: wolfe10 on 01/21/15 08:20am Straight if the belts are the correct ones, the fact that information technology/they have been slippy way I would install a new one-- even if you have to pay for it. Slipping causes overheating of the India rubber.

how do you know they were slipping? I have installed belts for years and take up had news ones sqeak level though there non slippy

however if there wheezy the only way to fix is most potential replace

Posted By: aztortuga on 01/21/15 09:47am What you Crataegus laevigata be hearing, if it is so flash you can hear information technology from the drivers seat, is the fan bearing. Information technology may not beryllium the unused belts. Do look into this before the fan comes off and damages the radiator fan support etc.m
Posted Aside: wolfe10 on 01/21/15 10:04am Yup, the fan bearing along with the alternator and A/C compressor all need to be checkered.

If the fan comportment is sorry, Cat has both greasable and sealed replacements in stock. Best is greasable IF YOU WILL GREASE IT. If not, the paved bearings are better than the greasable that you do non lubricating oil.

Posted By: rongtamw along 01/22/15 11:12am My experience has been that the belt that is recommended for this application will not fit if it is a notched bang..The whang must be inverted in order to fit over the crank pulley..That is why person will try using a longer belt.Merely the longer belt cant be adjusted to the right tension.
Posted By: thegriffins on 01/29/15 04:07pm Finally, after 10 years at Freightliner, they called to say it was repaired! The squealing was caused by a unsound idle pulley. They did replace one of the belts that they had already replaced. You would think they would have caught that the first time! Thank you so much for all of the advice. This is our first diesel and we learn something new everyday!
Posted By: mike brez connected 01/29/15 04:08pm Thank you for posting back what the trouble was.
Posted Past: Jagtech on 01/29/15 04:20pm Belt stuffing is the rank bad thing to exercise on a bang. An middle-aged mechanics trick that I use (I'm an older mechanic!) is to apply blackboard methamphetamine to the swath. It immediately stops the confess, and removes the glaze on the belt and pulleys.
